Item Details
Featured in this lot are six silver gelatin Western/Cowboy images, including two Doubleday photos circa 1910-1935. The two Doubleday photo post cards were taken at the Billings Fair in 1935, with the first titled, "Jack Tracey on Will James Billings Fair (Doubleday)" and shows Jack Tracey riding a bucking bronco while many spectators sit on the fence and watch. The second is titled, "Jack Shields Under Laurel Leaf Billings, Mont. (Doubleday)" and shows Jack Shields under the horse, Laurel Leaf, after taking a fall while spectators watch in the background. The third photo post card shows a camp in the background while many people in the foreground sit on horses and horse drawn carriages and wagons. The fourth photo shows three men on a large tractor plowing a field. One man is driving, one man is watching and the third is watching the large plow being pulled by the tractor. The back of the photo is marked, "1910" in pencil. The fifth photo postcard shows three men having their photo taken inside a bar. They are wearing large chaps and cowboy hats. One is sitting while the other two stand on either side of him. A sign behind them on the wall read, "Bud's Gin Mill" with revolver graphics around the wall. The back of the photo shows writing in French done in black ink. The photo post card reads, "Crystal Hall Photo Studio / 48 E. 14th St.". The sixth and largest photo shows two men standing inside a bar getting their photo taken. They are wearing white shirts, handkerchiefs, cowboy hats and holsters while they pose for the photo. The signs behind them read, "Special To-Day Buck Beer On Tap" and "Whiskey Georges Saloon". Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. The silver gelatin photos show good condition overall with wear present from their age and use over the years. Slight tears and fading present, but no signs of obvious damage is present. The photos measure 3 3/8" L x 5 3/8" W, while the largest measures 6 7/8" L x 4 7/8" W.
